a%JuC2 KQ% GIz x DEKP5?] The "blue laser" is an exciting new device used in physics. The potential is now being recognized for its development into a commercial lighting system read.freeduan.com using about a tenth of the power and with a thousand times the operating lifetime of a comparable conventional system. This comprehensive work introduces the subject at a level suitable for graduate students. It covers the basics physics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) based on gallium nitride and related nitride semiconductors, and gives an outline of their structural, transport and
optical properties, and the relevant device physics. It begins with the fundamentals, and covers both theory and experiment, as well as an examination of actual and potential device applications. Shuji Nakamura and Nichia Chemicals Industries made the initial breakthroughs in the field, and these have revealed that LEDs and LDs are a sophisticated physical phenomenon and a commercial reality.

dVtG/0 With the availability of off-the-shelf commercial ultrafast lasers, a small revolution in materials research is underway, as it is now possible to use these tools without being an expert in the development of the tools themselves. Lasers with short-duration optical pulses—in the sub-picosecond (less than one-trillionth of a second) range—are finding a variety of applications, from basic research on fast processes in materials to new methods for microfabrication by direct writing. So, how fast is ultrafast? The answer often depends on the characteristic time scale of the application or the science being studied. The selection of topics in this issue is intended to illustrate the breadth of this new area of ultrafast lasers in materials research and the applications that have already been generated. We invite you to view the introductory article for this issue, "Ultrafast Lasers in Materials Research" by David G. Cahill and Steve M. Yalisove, Guest Editors.

i-_mTY&M Rating: 5
+7.',@8_V 83_h J This book provides a extremely useful general introduction to laser material processing. The new sections added to it from previous editions (rapid prototyping, laser forming and laser cleaning) reflect how lasers are being used more in manufaturing. A very short section on laser safety is also added. The result, however, is an even wider subject field than previously (it could fill 100 books if covered in depth). I would recommend anyone beginning a course of study or career in laser processing to sit down and read this book first to put everything in perspective. It is written in a way that makes it firstly readable and only secondarily a reference book. More in-depth books in more specific interest areas will be required for specialists.

x Summary:
_]H&,</ Lasers now play a major part in the processing of the disparate materials used in engineering and manufacturing. The range of procedures in which they are involved is ever increasing. With this growing prominence comes a need for clear and instructive textbooks to teach the next generation of laser users. The informal style of Laser Material Processing (3rd Edition) will guide you smoothly from the basics of laser physics to the detailed treatment of all the major materials processing techniques for which lasers are now essential.
S2&4g/ Helps you to understand how the laser works and to decide which laser is best for your purposes
sUQ@7sTj New chapters on bending and cleaning reflect the changes in the field since the last edition completing the range of practical knowledge about the processes possible with lasers already familiar to users of this well-known text.
bWU'cw Provides a firm grounding in the safety aspects of laser use.
YN F k Professor Steen´s lively presentation is supported by a number of original cartoons by Patrick Wright and Noel Ford which will bring a smile to your face and ease the learning process. Laser Material Processing (3rd Edition) will be of use as university or industrial course material for senior undergraduate, graduate and non-degree technical training in optoelectronics, laser processing and advanced manufacturing. Practising engineers and technicians in these areas will also find the book an authoritative source of information on the rapidly expanding use of industrial lasers in material processing.
!pX>!&sb --Written in a style that includes both technical detail and humor, Bill Steen´s book on laser material processing is the standard by which others are judged. It is the text in my graduate-level course on the subject.-- C.E. Albright, The Ohio State University
on`3&0,. --I have used two previous editions for my class. The third edition has included some of the more recent applications. It is easy to read and explanations are lucid. I expect it will receive wide acceptance in class rooms world wide.-- J. Mazumder, University of Michigan
^u ~Q/4 --It is the great merit of this book to offer a compact survey on laser material processing. A useful and fascinating book, pleasant to read with many useful figures and examples of industrial applications. It is a textbook for advanced students in this field, but also a reference book for engineers.-- H. Weber, Technische Universitat Berlin
