I did that several years ago fo medical application spectral instruments, using CodeV + Matlab for optics design and simulation.

You are absolutely right.

1, Modelling optical system in codev and getting system response functions, using these functions in matlab to build input/output spectrum relationship( such as: if input spectrum distribution is known, matlab does convolution to predict the output,... );
By the way, right now 9.7/9.8 provides diffraction imaging function, probably it can perform the same.

2, Further more, OE detector and electronics being modeled in matlab to simulate whole system, like saturation, dynamic, SNR, frequency response, even thermal & mechanical variation.

3, At that time(back to 2001), non-sequencial optics softwares were not available for me --- had to use codev+matlab to do straylight and illumination efficiency design.
